Nice Express ("we", "us") publishes SmartCtrl (the "App"), a universal TV remote for Android phones and tablets, available on Google Play (package org.niceexpress.smartctrltv). The App controls Roku, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV / Google TV, Hisense VIDAA and Vizio SmartCast TVs over your Wi-Fi network. This policy explains what information the App uses, why, and the choices you have.

1. In short

  • No account and no sign-up.
  • We run no server for the App: nothing is sent to us.
  • What the App needs to remember (your TV, pairing keys, settings) stays on your device.
  • The App is free and shows ads from Google AdMob, which may collect data as explained in section 5.

2. Finding and controlling your TV

To find your TVs, the App sends discovery requests on your local network using the SSDP and Bonjour (Network Service Discovery) protocols and lists the TVs that answer. When you choose a TV, its name and IP address are saved on your device so the App can reconnect to it. Remote commands go directly from your device to your TV over your local network and never pass through us.

3. Pairing keys

Some TVs give the App a secret when you pair them, so that you do not have to approve the App again:

  • LG webOS: a client key;
  • Samsung Tizen: a token;
  • Amazon Fire TV: a token;
  • Hisense VIDAA: a MAC address generated by the App;
  • Vizio SmartCast: an AUTH token.

These secrets are encrypted with AES-GCM using a key kept in the Android Keystore, then stored in the App's private storage (SharedPreferences). They are only used to connect to your TV and are never sent to us.

4. Settings stored on your device

The App also keeps these preferences on your device:

  • the theme and the 3D relief;
  • vibration and key sound;
  • the last TV you used;
  • the number of times the App has been opened;
  • when the unlock obtained with a rewarded video expires;
  • the times when ads were last shown.

You can delete all of this at any time by clearing the App's storage in Android Settings, or by uninstalling the App.

5. Advertising (Google AdMob)

The App is free and funded only by advertising. Ads are served by Google AdMob in four formats: banner, interstitial, app open, and rewarded video (watched only if you choose to). AdMob may collect your device's advertising ID and ad-related data, such as device information, IP address and your interactions with ads, to show and measure ads. Google processes this data under its own Privacy Policy; see also how Google uses information from apps that use its services.

Consent in the EEA and the UK. If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, the App shows Google's consent form (User Messaging Platform) before any ad is requested. You can change your choice at any time with "Ad privacy options" in the App's Settings.

Advertising ID. You can reset or delete your advertising ID, or limit personalized ads, in Android Settings › Privacy › Ads (or Settings › Google › Ads, depending on your device).

6. Permissions

  • Internet access: to communicate with your TV and to load ads.
  • Local network (multicast): to find the TVs on your Wi-Fi network.
  • Advertising ID (AD_ID): added by Google's advertising SDK and used for ads as described in section 5.

7. No account, no purchases

The App has no account, no in-app purchases and no subscriptions. We never ask for your name, email address or payment details.

8. Children

The App is intended for people aged 13 and over and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided information through the App, contact us and we will help remove it.

9. Your rights

Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in the European Union or the CCPA in California), you may have rights to access, delete or object to the processing of your personal data. Because we keep none of your data on servers, clearing the App's storage or uninstalling it deletes what the App keeps. For data collected by Google AdMob, use the options in section 5, or contact us and we will help.

10. Security and retention

The data the App keeps stays on your device until you clear the App's storage or uninstall it. Pairing keys are encrypted as described in section 3. We keep no copies.

11. Changes

We may update this policy when the App changes. The effective date at the top shows the latest version.
